Just for Fun – From The Tomten

Just for fun, here’s an excerpt from The Tomten and an image in the gallery. It truly is a wonderful book and a fun part of my Swedish heritage and holidays. Growing up, we read it every Christmas.

Winter is long and dark and cold, and sometimes the Tomten dreams of summer.
   Winters come and winters go,
   Summers come and summers go,
Soon the swallows will be here, thinks the Tomten.
Winters come and summers go;
year follows year.
But as long as people live at the old farm in the forest, every night the Tomten will trip around between the houses on his small, silent feet.
(Adapted by Astrid Lindgren from a poem by Viktor Rydberg)

HOW TO NEEDLE FELT

Needle felting is the process of shaping loose wool into a solid sculpture by repeatedly poking it with a barbed needle. The barbs tangle the wool fibers and lock them into whatever shape you form — no glue, no sewing, no water. It's a quiet, focused craft you can pick up for ten minutes at a time or work on for a whole afternoon.

For this kit, you'll start by forming the main body, then build up the head, legs, ears, and tail. The final step is covering your sheep with Icelandic yarn to create the authentic curly coat. Karen walks you through every part in the video series, so you're never guessing what comes next.

HOW EASY IS THIS?

Beginner-friendly. If you've never needle felted before, you can absolutely do this — the video series was built with first-timers in mind. Most people finish their sheep in 4–7 hours of total work, spread across several sessions.

The kit includes specific templates so you're not guessing on sizing, the wool is carded chosen for being easy to felt. AND felting is forgiving. You can easily fix mistakes and reshape as you go.

Things to know going in: felting needles are sharp. Kids under 12 should be supervised. You'll need a foam mat to work on - we include this.

WHAT ELSE DO I NEED?

Just a scissors. Everything else is included!

ABOUT THE ARTIST

About Bella's Flock

Bella’s Flock is named after Bella, the sheep that started it all.

We began on our farm in Minnesota, working directly with wool and learning the craft hands-on. While Bella and her flock have since moved on to new pastures, that original starting point continues to shape how we design and make our products.

From our Minnesota studio, we focus on clear designs, natural materials, and projects that are straightforward to make and look good when finished.

Trusted by over 10,000 customers with a 4.8 star rating.
